A tragedy occurred a few weeks ago in Kauai in Hawaii. 13 year old girl Bethany Hamilton was in the water having a laugh, surfing with her mates, when suddenly a shark appeared. The shark bit her arm off and bit 17 inches out of her surfboard. He was thought to be 15 feet long. 

Bethany has won a fair number of surfing awards and was thought to be a star in the rising. She is still recovering in hospital after the nasty incident. Her family said that she has lost her left arm just below the shoulder.
